The Helderberg basin, is one of the most visually dramatic areas in the
Cape, with the Hottentots Holland and Helderberg Mountain ranges creating
a powerful backdrop against which the valley descends into vineyards
and finally on to a coastline swept with warm waters and effortlessly
white, sandy beaches. This little paradise contains the towns of Somerset
West, Strand, Gordon's Bay and Sir Lowry's Pass. From it you can access
nearby towns like Hermanus and Stellenbosch as well as many other Western
Cape tourist attractions.
The Helderberg has its own wine route
with over 20 members, including some world renown estates that produce award winning wines.
For the adventurous, the area offers
many hiking trails, a variety of watersports, abseiling and paragliding.
Hiking Trails: Helderberg Nature Reserve, Silwerboomkloof Trail and Helderberg plaas trail - Somerset West.
Danie Miller Hiking Trail, Steenbras River Gorge Trail - Gordon's Bay.
Whagon Wheel Trail and Boland Hiking Trail - Sir Lowry's Pass.
Unwind on one of the area's three 18 hole golf courses, relax in the
Helderberg Nature Reserve or sip sundowners on a cruise out of Strand
or Gordon's Bay. From June to December each year whales can be viewed
from the magnificent scenic coastal drive between Gordon's Bay and Rooi
Els.
Somerset West has become famous for its craft markets, THE COUNTRY CRAFT MARKET and the HELDERBERG VELDWINKEL. These markets are held at Southey Vines in Main Street. Refer to our Community news page for details
